Job Description:

The Directional Drill Team Foreman is responsible for leading and supervising directional drilling crews involved in the installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure. This position oversees daily job site operations, ensures safe and efficient drilling activities, coordinates crews and equipment, and maintains compliance with company standards, customer requirements, and applicable safety regulations. The Foreman serves as the primary field leader responsible for productivity, workmanship quality, and crew accountability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise directional drill crews in the installation of underground conduit, fiber optic cable, and utility infrastructure.
  • Coordinate daily job site activities, crew assignments, equipment usage, and material needs.
  • Operate directional drilling equipment and related construction machinery as needed.
  • Review project prints, utility locates, bore plans, and construction specifications prior to beginning work.
  • Ensure all underground utilities are properly identified and protected during drilling operations.
  • Monitor production schedules and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on time, and within scope.
  • Enforce compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, traffic control requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Coordinate with project managers, inspectors, utility representatives, subcontractors, and customers as needed.
  • Troubleshoot field issues and make operational decisions to maintain productivity and quality standards.
  • Monitor equipment condition and coordinate maintenance or repair needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of construction operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of directional drilling and underground utility construction experience preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or crew leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in telecommunications or fiber optic construction preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and bore plans.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required.
  • CDL preferred or ability to obtain CDL.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of directional drilling methods, underground utility construction, and fiber installation practices.
  • Ability to safely operate drilling equipment, vac systems, trailers, and support equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and utility damage prevention practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage crews in fast-paced and physically demanding environments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project priorities and schedules.
  • Proficiency with basic technology, reporting systems, and mobile communication tools preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in physically demanding conditions for extended periods.

Work Environment

This position primarily works outdoors at active construction sites and is regularly exposed to traffic, noise, dust, mud, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions. Extended hours and overtime may be required based on project demands.
