Welcome

Welcome to Details of Detroit, a website intended to display a better, and lesser viewed side of the city. I wanted to find a way to show people the wonderful details that I see so often through my job with the city's Historic District Commission. When I travel and talk to other people about where I live and work, they are suprised when I describe the great architecture that can be found here. What better way to show this than to create a photographic website.

What You Will Not Find

In the descriptive text you will not find addresses to the residences. I do not wish to intrude on these owners' privacy. At most I will give a general geographic area. The major downtown buildings will have a name or address since they are prominent city buildings. Many think Detroit is a wasteland of vacant lots, abandoned homes and burned out buildings. While every city has these problems, and Detroit certainly has a lion's share, I wanted to focus on those areas that are intact, with owners who love and maintain their properties. There are some buildings shown here that are vacant, but I hope to show the potential that these buildings have to be repaired and occupied.

What You Will Find

Most of these photos were taken by myself from 2000 to 2003. Those few taken by a colleague are noted in the photo text. I have separated the photos into eight categories of building details. In some cases, a building deserves to be in more than one, but they rarely are. I tried to take a prominent feature of the structure and place it accordingly. While there are a lot of photos on these pages, this is just a small portion of the architectural variety that can be found in Detroit.

Thank you for visiting and looking around at the details of Detroit. I hope that you will have a good time looking at all the wonderful details Detroiters get to see everyday.
